“Not what we have but what we enjoy constitutes our abundance.” — Jean Antoine Petit-Senn

Abundance is often defined simply as "an amount that is more than enough." But for us, it's the profound quality of having what we genuinely want in life—love, happiness, meaningful work, and deep connection. In a world of such plenty, why is the primary motivator for so many the fear of scarcity?

From the moment we are born into this literal human race, we are driven by an impulsive chase for "more"—more money, more status, more love. This impulse, once a vital survival tactic for our ancestors, has created a world of material excess. Now, we find ourselves crippled by indecision, paralysed by the sheer number of paths we could take to satisfy our wants.

Chose Presence over Progress

As Thoreau wisely stated, “The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it.” Yet, many of us are chasing delayed gratification, believing that meaningful work requires immense effort and that our efforts should be deposited into a bank account for future reaping, which some of us will never have time to withdraw from. In doing so, we bypass the simple, day-to-day joys that are the true substance of life, mistaking them as trivial when compared to complex personal pursuits. We forget that meaning can only ever be found in the moment of being.

We prioritise a future of "meaning" over today's happiness, largely because happiness doesn’t come easily when we are constantly engineered to "work towards" something else. As Alan Watts reminds us, if we are unduly absorbed in improving our lives, we may forget to live them altogether. Running toward a horizon we will never reach, we bury tomorrow under today’s struggle.

Successful Spending

But what if you could decide that you have already won? What if you could stop training toward the infinite loss of your time? The truth is, in noticing today's riches, you have already arrived.

Time is truly the only thing we don’t have in abundance; I hope that you spend it joyfully.
